Thank you for showing him. I had seen
Eddie in Bevin, but as the professor choose a Kirel type
'hood I assumed Eddie was not here. Must clean my
glasses better. Perhaps Eddie wants
to see the movie?

Excellent! Cordelia has accepted the
position. I think we'll install an umbrella stand by the
nexus machine - there are a few rainy places people will
be arriving from. Hmm, breakfast in the egg room sounds
very tempting.
What's this? A package from Elkae.
[Rip!]. Hungarian almond mead! Mmmmm. But where
is Elkae? Oh, I remember. She's been sending
postcards from various exotic locations. I do hope she's
having a good time. I miss her.
Hello, Speedy!
What is this place? Well, it's a research establishment,
where we're going to try and discover new and
interesting things about the city, as revealed by
Expansion Pack 1. But I know not everyone has been there
yet. So it's also a place where people can just pop in
and visit whenever they like. I'm sure someone will be
able to provide some pictures. The place is a bit bare
at the moment, so we're going to try and cheer it up a
bit. And whenever I feel like taking a break from the
work here, I'll come and relax at the Age & Country.
I'm going to make it a rule: no one to discuss work at
the A&C.

Cordelia rushes into the hood (she
really must slow down, she's going to tire herself out
with all this rushing around) and looks approvingly at
the umbrella stand next to the nexus machine.
"Oh
dear Thietris, he really thinks of everything" she says
as she puts her brolly in the stand and wanders over
towards the egg room.
"Looks like breakfast was
popular, it's almost all gone already. I'll have to get
some more supplies in. Perhaps we should have toast and
marmalade tomorrow too" she muses.
She helps
herself to a mug of coffee - at least there was still
some of that left - and wanders across to the auditorium
to see what's going on.
To her amazement she
spots Speedy.
"Wait a moment, didn't I just see
you in the A&C Hotel?" she asks in
bemusement.
Speedy explains how she managed to
make an exact copy of herself so that she could be in
two places at once. Cordelia is impressed at this
idea.
"Maybe I could do with using that gadget
Speedy, it might save me having to rush around
everywhere - trying to be in two places at once is very
tiring you know!"
Sipping her coffee, she waves
to Prof. T and wanders over to find out if he needs
anything
doing.

Ah, there you are, Cordelia! Now, as you
can see, I have here a pump and a length of hose. If you
and, er - Stellaflora! Over here! If you could use these
to fill the fountain with water from the stream, I
thought it would rather nice to have some water
lilies.
What's that, Stellaflora? Yes, of course
you can have a room to use as a laboratory. I believe
Almech's already managed to get one of the doors open.
And it's nice to see the imager working - well done,
Almech!
Stellaflora and Cordelia set about the
task of filling the fountain. As the water runs through
the hose the pair chat about how nice it will be to hear
the gentle trickling of the water once more.
"It
makes the hood come alive, don't you think
Stellaflora?"
Stellaflora grins and nods as he
thinks about how much he is going to enjoy setting up
his new laboratory.
Finally the fountain is full
and they step back to admire it.
"How's that Professor?" asks Cordelia, "is that
what you had in
mind?"

Grizz, tired of running around the
cavern at his age, has decided to open a new establishment in Prof. T's hood. Drop
in any time. The coffee is always free, and there's a
plate of Fig Newtons always full. Get whatever you need
for your explorations (except brollys). We
never close. If I'm not here, take what you need and
just leave a note on the spindle on the
counter.

in Bevin. "When the whispers come in the dark, do
you pay attention?"
A
tall, thin, rather nervous looking and frightened man
walks slowly around the fountain, peering through his
thick eyeglasses with astonishment and awe at the
buildings around him. He is carrying a small suitcase
and briefcase, and his pocket protector is stuffed with
pencils and pens. His tweed jacket is slightly rumpled
and dusty, his shoes unshined, and he gives the
appearance of being more concerned with his thoughts and
theories than his looks. He is obviously a scholar, and
he pauses every few steps to make some notes on his
personal data assistant. Eventually he wanders near
Cordelia, and he jumps a bit, as if he is startled to
find anyone else here. Stammering and blushing shyly, he
takes a moment to work up his nerve, evidently he is
quite awkward and shy around women. Giving up his
attempts to speak, he digs into his pocket, fumbling
with a handful of scrawled notes and references until he
finds the paper he wants. He overcomes his bashfulness
long enough to hand it to Cordelia, then he waits
nervously as she reads it.

Respected Sir; This is
to introduce Dr. Phineus Warrell, PhD. He is, in spite
of his appearance, a most meticulous researcher and
theorist, highly respected for his work in theoretical
physics and quantum mechanics, certainly one of the most
brilliant minds in the scientific community. We have
dispatched him to investigate recent claims of unusual
events and bizarre manifestations that have been
reported to us, and we hope for your cooperation in
providing him with the modest research facilities he may
require. As you might observe, he sometimes requires a
little looking after, no more than reminding him to eat
something once in a while, or sometimes a little
assistance in keeping him from wandering over a cliff
while deep in thought. We would appreciate any aid
you might be able to provide him, say, a very easy to
find room with a cot, one that the average person could
locate in their sleep? He requires no equipment or other
facilities, his PDA is now wired into our main computer,
as he tends to lose track all of his notes. In
closing I might add a personal observation. He is indeed
an absent minded geek, but a harmless
one.
Signed, Dr. Cornelius Einstein Chairman,
Research Department Mass. Institute of
Technology
As Cordelia reads the letter, the mans
fingers are busy on his Personal Data
Assistant.
3/04/04 Arrived in the city.
Strange architecture, pretty, seems impractical in
spots, impossible in other places. Strange
streetlights, without wiring, don’t understand how they
glow! Background music without any apparent source!
Fountain, no plumbing or pumps, but active nonetheless!
Awnings and sunshades, yet no rain or sun! Powered doors
without power source, redundant stairways, needless
bridges, windows without views! Pretty girl greeting me,
though!
Cordelia inspects the strange looking
gentleman with a critical eye.
She reads the note
through several times, folds it and puts it in her
pocket.
"Pleased to meet you, Dr Warrell. I am
quite sure that the Professor will be only too pleased
to supply you with the facilities you require for your
research. If you could just wait a few moments whilst he
reads your letter. Please help yourself to coffee from
the Egg Room, there's some biscuits there too - freshly
baked this morning."
She directs Dr Warrell to
the Egg Room and then runs over to Prof. Thietris with
the letter - a big grin on her face.
"Professor T
- there's a Dr Warrell here for you. He's been
recommended by Dr Einstein from The Mass. Institute of
Technology. I'm afraid he's a rather strange looking
chap - but I am sure appearances can be
disceptive."
Cordelia hands Thietris the note and
waits while he reads it.
Just one more thought
comes to Cordelia's mind while she waits - the strange
looking man seems to be rather absent minded, he seems
to think it's still March

Well CordeliaG, this device is rather
handy in making clones and so forth, but if there are
too many clones around and interacting with the same
people, then it can be tooo confusing. I only use this
for job purposes, not for life. (sees the new
scientist) Hello there! I'm Speedyserd! You work at
MIT? I live right down the road from there. An
interesting place, that MIT... anyways. (Dr. Warrell,
was first shocked to see a blue stork present, but was
terrified when he found out it could speak. It defies
all sorts of logic, what is this place?, he
thinks)
Studying gives you knowledge.
Knowledge is power. Power corrupts. I am learning how to
be corrupt.
Excellent,
Cordelia!! He also has no idea where he is, how he
got there, or how to return! He tends to forget where
his room is, and forgets to wear his needed
glasses!
Notes from Dr Warrell Just met a
rather beautiful girl, who helpfully directed me to a
rather odd room. There is a mysterious egg shaped
object suspended in midair, slowly turning and bobbing.
I suspected a form of magnetic levitation, but there is
no magnetic field present! I have just been
interrupted in my examination by the approach of an
incredible sight. Dr Einstein, I swear, it is a six foot
tall, bright blue, improbably shaped bird! And it
speaks! English! She just spoke casually of living
near M.I.T., and I wonder if there has been any report
around campus about such a manifestation, perhaps
something to do with a frat house prank?
He
possibly might have been able to work up the nerve to
speak to Speedy, but since her voice is female, it
triggers his inherent shyness, and he is both shocked
and blushing, stammering helplessly as he tries to
answer.
Dr Warrell thanks Almech profusely,
setting his luggage on the bed. His hands are shaking a
bit from the shock of his encounter with Speedy, and he
begs Almech for a little time alone to settle his
nerves. By long habit he picks up his personal data
assistant.
Note from Dr Warrell Just shown to
my room by a very nice man wearing a rather unusual
t-shirt. That stork, I don't understand how it could
speak! I suspect the mimicing of english must have been
taught to her by some mischevious students at M.I.T.,
since she refered to it specifically. That's it, it was
a prank to frighten me on my arrival here! Dr
Einstein, I wish you would find the frat house
responsible and talk to them, that gave me quite a
fright! I have not yet met Dr Thietris Squirrel, I am
sure he is a very busy man, and I assume it will be a
while before I am granted some of his time. I hope he
will be like you, Dr Einstein, elderly and grey haired,
scholarly and conservatively dressed, I don't approve of
t-shirts in a research environment!
Well Maegnas, with
more years experience of being a PA than I care to even
contemplate, I think I have probably developed an eye
for these sorts of inconsistencies
